Let’s go back to basics

Taba Ajum

The brutual killing of young boy Bomjen Gapak recently in Itanagar has once again ignited heated debate over safety and security of the citizens in the state capital. The loss of young soul has traumatized every section of society and there is deepening anger over failure of capital police to nab the culprit. The citizens trust police and think that they are here to ensure safety of common masses. When they fail, naturally police have to take all the blame for deteriorating law and order situation in the capital.

Numerous organizations has come out and condemned the incident. Such condemnations are becoming more of routine exercise and it does not go beyond a ‘condemnation press statement’. Also blame game between various political leaders over incident is intensifying and debate is getting nasty with passing days. Majority of people are busy criticizing about all the bad things ailing our society. Not many seem interested to retrospect and try to figure out where we are getting it wrong. As per the police version late Bomjen became alleged victim of group clash among youths. It means his murderers’ must be young soul like the death one. By now the parent’s of the murderers’ of Bomjen must be aware of the heinous crime committed by their children. Instead of protecting and shielding their criminal son, they should hand over him to the police. There is a famous English saying which goes like this, “charity begins at home.” It’s time to retrospect and let charity be begun at every Arunachalee home. In our state there are people who preach their kids like this- “we belong to this tribe, this district, this clan, this circle and that we should not be scared to use dao or gun during clash.” If parents talk like this, children will definitely take it seriously as parents are considered to be the first teacher of any children. Every day at home children are being told not to fear law and that anything can be manipulated in our state. Every clan promotes those people who have criminal records and glorifies them infront of the children. Once in my office group of boys came and started arguing with one of my staff over a press release. The leader of boy yelled saying “I belong to this district and this clan. I can do anything. Tum log janta hoga hum log kitna kharab aadmi hai.” The boy was hardly 19 year old but already knew that being from a certain clan and tribe gives him the privilege to get violent without the fear of law. I was sad to hear him saying all those stuff. Perhaps he has been given wrong education by his parents and poor boy was only following what his parents taught him. It’s the time parents of Arunachal take active role in giving proper moral education to their children. The young kids need to be taught that humanity is above tribe, clan and region. Often I hear parents telling their children, “Don’t make friendship with the people of this and that tribe as they are bad people.” The hatred is being seeded at home and that’s the reason there is widening gap. A social revolution should start from home and parents need to take active role. Let’s not be dependent on any union, association or for that matter government to spread this revolution. In a small state like ours where everybody knows each other, if wish, we can truly spread this message of brotherhood.

Ever since social media like Facebook and Twitter became popular, often in various forum and group I read young people expressing concern over rampant corruption and other issues concerning the state.  These youths write in plenty in various readers forum column of newspaper and shows rare courage to take on against corrupt system. It gives lot of hope seeing how they are aware about prevailing situation. Most of us thought Panchayat and Municipal election 2013 will change course of direction in the state and we will witness young generation exercising their franchise wisely. Instead, money ruled the roost in the recently concluded election. The citizens who seem worried about corruption forgot everything at the time of election and votes were virtually purchased. With due respect to some honest voters, majority sold themselves and everything is back to square one. It’s time we introspect and ask ourselves whether we show honesty only in various social networking site and readers forum columns of newspaper?

Illegal immigration

Illegal immigration in Assam and other North Eastern states is not only an issue which can drastically change the demography, it has every potential to bring the ethnic and indigenous people of this region into verge of extinction.

And the funniest part is that the issue is dearer to many political parties in the region as it helps them to garner support of common masses in crucial times or the time of elections. And the most embarrassing part of the illegal immigration issue is that it has taken the shape of corruption, which, more or less, runs in the vein of human beings.

Many scholars and experts have suggested ways and means to stop illegal immigrants, particularly from neighbouring countries in North Eastern state. But in practice very little has been done without results.

Former Governor of Assam Lt Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha is right when he says “Vote bank politics resulted in deterioration of the situation in Assam and there is every possibility of worsening of the situation if the problem of infiltration of foreigners is not dealt with.”  Mr Sinha vociferously had raised voice against infiltration of foreigners in Assam and also submitted a report to then President of India on immigration with suggestions for dealing with the problems.  But his suggestions were put in cold storage.

After hue and cry, Assam Government had published a white paper on immigration issue last year. It was revealed that only 2,442 illegal migrants had been detected and deported since the signing of the historic Assam Accord in 1985. As usual the Assam Chief Minister vowed to take strict measures to get rid of illegal migrants.

Since Assam is regarded as big brother by other North Easter state, the politicians and think-tank of Assam must come with a decisive point to save indigenous population from the invisible aggression of illegal migrants. Though the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants first penetrate into Assam, they spread their tentacles in other parts of the  NE states silently and slowly.

There is no denying the fact that the illegal Bangladeshi had already captured Tripura and silent invasion by them is going on in other NE states including Arunachal Pradesh.

With the arrival of railway project and implementation of numerable dams, large number of illegal Bangladeshis will make their way to Arunachal as labour force.

And the most unfortunate part is that we the indigenous people of North East including Arunachalees are now running from pillar to post to accumulate all the relevant documents like birth certificate, PRC, death certificates, voter I-Card etc only to prove in our own land that we are not illegal immigrants.

Blaming the system and Govt machineries only for influx of Bangladeshis will serve no purpose. We the local people (including politicians and bureaucrats) will have to prepare our mind to accept the fact that by embracing the illegal migrants as labour force we are actually forcing  the next generation to be ruled by these ‘labour force’ within next few decades.

Illegal migrants issue is a social issue rather than  political in nature. There is an urgent need to chalk out long-term strategy which, in one hand,  will help us to be self-sufficient in every sphere of life and  on the other hand, show the illegal immigrants the way out.

Many questions but no answers

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to express few words regarding the article “Ignorance is the last excuse for getting cheap publicity” by political secretary to CM Mr. Bamang Tago. In this regard I think Mr. Bamang Tago did not fully understood actual meaning and concept of article “Is Arunachal Pradesh a failed state” by former MP Kiren Rijiju. I don’t think Mr. Bamang Tago’s article is befitting reply.

According to me Arunachal is not a failed state but Govt has failed us. As per Mr. Tago Arunachal is having perfect Governance. As a concern citizen of Arunachal I want to ask few question to him (1) Why 1000 crore PDS scam case is still unsolved. As we know recently Rs. 85 crore payment has been made to few PDS contractor from state fund who are already involved in PDS scam (2) Why inter - state (Arunachal, Assam) boundary are not solved. (3) Why Green Field Airport location has not been finalized yet after so many years. (4) Why Arunachal based Apex Bank is still not fully revived. (5) Why Minister, MLA and high profile officer have big 2, 3 private residence and costly luxurious cars. What are salary of Ministers and MLAs? Why Govt, lands are being encroached and private houses being constructed? Why murders, dacoit, rape and extortion is prevailing in the state capital complex. There are problems everywhere and it does look bad.

Yours,

Discrepancy in distribution of stipend money

Dear Editor,

This is for the Education Department, Office of the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education and other concerned authorities, whoever is responsible for the dealing of students’ scholarship studying outside the state.

I, personally, am glad to know that the scholarship for the students studying outside of the state has been disbursed, not to forget, after some melodramas. I have no idea about the students studying in other states of our great nation but the students studying in Meghalaya have received their stipend. Pursuing my higher education in North-East's one of the most reputed and prestigious University, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), I have come across a huge negligence. In the university, where I am now, we Arunachalees are around 60 in number and the list of the scholarship entitled to get stipend is only 40. We are depressed and want to know that how it happened? Why have we been left-out? Where is the money for 20 of us? Frankly, did you people fuelled your cars with that? Our names have been omitted knowingly or what? Thousands of questions are to be clarified by the concerned authorities of the respected department. Couple of weeks ago I was told by the employee who is managing all these, in the University that the list along with the cash has been received but he can't issue it because it came along with some other students who are not students of the university. So he had to send it back to Itanagar for clearance and rectify the error. Was that a mistake or is it a tactic to gulp in students' money?

This is a humblest request from all of us whose name is not in the list to the particular department and authorities to please not to play any kind of foul-play with the student’s scholarship. Our Government gives us less stipend in comparison to other states of North-East. The students of other states gets double than us morally that is not what trouble us much but whatever we are suppose to get is also not being delivered to us, that troubles the most. Please check every form as clean as you can and don't neglect even a single student. At the best we can at least manage a month with it without bothering our poor parents. We students need your encouraging actions. Please take up some genuine steps to check what kind of error you might have committed or whether the mistake is on our side or not.

Yours’

Elijah Taying
